         Humanin (HN) is a peptide that inhibits neuronal cell death induced by several familial Alzheimer's disease genes and amyloid beta (1-43) (human). Studies have shown that in F11 cells expressing the familial Alzheimer's disease gene K595N/M596L-APP, the secretion of amyloid beta (1-40) and amyloid beta (1-42) is not affected by humanin. K595N/M596L-APP directly triggers neuronal cell death and is caused by amyloid beta.

            Humanin (human) (1-24-Protein humanin (human)) is a mitochondrial-derived cell-protective peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA that protects against cellular stress and apoptosis in multiple cell types by regulating multiple signaling mechanisms, including the JAK/STAT pathway and interactions with BCL-2 family proteins.

             A new study led by researchers at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology is the first to demonstrate that a tiny protein has a major impact on health and longevity in animals and humans.

              The researchers examined humanin, a peptide encoded in the small genome of mitochondria, which are the energy source of cells. The multisite collaboration, from measurements in laboratory animals to human patients, demonstrated how high levels of humanin in the body are associated with longevity and health, and can reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
"Humanin has long been known to help prevent many age-related diseases, and this is the first time it has been shown to extend lifespan as well," said senior author Pinchas Cohen, professor of gerontology, medicine and biological sciences and dean of the USC Davis School.
